HR guide: ‘Portfolio Assessment’
A portfolio assessment is a test in which the student shows a portfolio with assignment(s), evidence and/or reflection to prove they have mastered the required competencies. This portfolio can also be the focus of a ‘Criterion-Oriented Interview (CGI)’. By asking the student for clarification and in-depth questions, you can test whether the required knowledge, skills and attitudes have actually been mastered.

Portfolio assessment with or without CGI in an online environment
A portfolio assessment without a criterion specific interview can be held without any problems. The student submits the portfolio via CumLaude, where the student’s work is scanned with Ephorus for plagiarism.
A portfolio assessment with a criterion-oriented interview (CGI) requires more work. The portfolio can still be submitted via CumLaude, but the CGI must be administered online. Before the start of the assessment, inform the student of the chosen changes and motivate your reasons.
A protocol is used to conduct online assessments. Please make sure that the protocol you use has been approved by the school’s exam board. The protocol offered here is an example:
Online alternatives to a criterion targeted interview
Option 1: Assessment interview with a recorded presentation
Sometimes students make an accompanying PowerPoint presentation as evidence for a portfolio assessment. If you choose to have students hand in their presentation separately, you must consider if you want to be able to see the student give the presentation.
Important points of attention
- Take time to view the presentation and formulate questions
- Discuss the questions with the co-assessor half an hour prior to the interview
- Discuss the protocol with the student before the start of the session
- Make sure your equipment is properly charged and you have a good connection
Option 2: Assessment interview with live presentation
You choose to conduct the entire assessment via an online connection. The interviews are conducted in MS Teams. When a presentation is given, the person can share their screen.
Important points of attention
- Discuss the questions with the co-assessor half an hour prior to the interview
- Discuss the protocol with the student before the start of the session
- Make sure your equipment is properly charged and you have a good connection
Option 3: Assessment group interview
Conducting a group interview, for example when a group of students (more than one individual student) submitted a group assignment, requires more coordination about who speaks when, than when conducting an individual assessment. This form of assessment is only recommended if the original assessment was also planned for a group setting. Key points involve the use of the camera, turning on the microphone and the use of the chat function in the interview.
Important points of attention
- Discuss the questions with the co-assessor half an hour before the interview, including which question will be asked to which student and if they may complement each other.
- Discuss the protocol with the students before the start of the session.
- Make sure your equipment is properly charged and you have a good connection
